Oil & Filter Change

Changing the engine oil and filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles reduces costly repairs, keeps warranties valid and increases gas mileage.

Synthetic Oil Change

Synthetic oil does everything that regular oil does but it does it better and longer. The reason is because the molecules that makes oil slippery are smaller in synthetic oil, thus, it lubricates better. It also isn't affected as much by contamination and breakdown as ordinary oil - thus you can go longer between oil changes. There are some considerations before converting to synthetic oil, so ask us before making any changes. This definitely should result in a noticeable increase in gas mileage. We recommend changing synthetic every 7,500 miles.

Transmission Service

Regular transmission fluid flushes reduce the chance a very costly repair will be needed and the chance of an unexpected breakdown. Heat is the nemesis of transmission fluid - it causes the fluid to oxidize reducing the lubrication capacity which accelerates the wear on internal components. Manufacturers have engineered methods that reduce heat, but this fluid still gets extremely hot every time you drive. Flushing every 30,000 miles is usually sufficient.

Cooling System

Regular cooling system fluid flushes reduce the chance that a very costly repair will be needed and the chance of an unexpected breakdown. Engine coolant (or anti-freeze) changes chemical composition over time. This change results in a very corrosive fluid which can damage engine parts and create scale that blocks coolant passageways. There are "long life" anti-freezes available, but their effectiveness is not proven. There are still some studies that indicate that they too become corrosive and destroy internal engine gaskets. At Pickering's we suggest using the traditional that is changed every 24 months or 30,000 miles.

Brake Fluid Flush

Changing this fluid reduces the chance of brake failure and the need to replace costly brake component parts - especially in ABS systems which are found in most of today's vehicles. Virtually all brake fluids absorb moisture from the air - there is no way to prevent this. The absorbed water creates rust and corrosion on the internal brake system components. If the concentration of water becomes too high, it can actually boil, compress, and cause an unsafe braking condition. We recommend flushing and replacing the fluid every 30,000 miles.

Fuel Filter

An old fuel filter can often create intermittent and mysterious problems and make it difficult to detect engine problems. All gasoline contains a small amount of dirt and contaminates that your fuel filter collects and this gradually reduces the flow of gas to your engine. When the filter is completely blocked, your car stops, or perhaps it fails to start. Usually, while there is only a partial flow of gas you may have a hard time starting, starting and stalling, or everything will seem fine at slow speed but sputter and run badly on the highway. Change it every 30,000 miles to get better gas mileage and reduce the stress of a potential breakdown.

Power Steering

We recommend flushing the fluid every 37,500 miles. Power steering fluid is exposed to high pressure, hot temperatures and it collects a lot of contaminants. This can result in excessive noise, hard steering, leaks and even complete steering failure. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms appear, some damage has probably been done. This can result in very expensive repairs.

Fuel Injector Service

Burning gasoline results in carbon deposits building up on fuel injector nozzles and internal engine parts. Over time, this carbon build-up causes poor engine performance, reduced gas mileage and sometimes damage to fuel injectors or internal engine parts. Every 37,500 miles we recommend servicing the fuel injection system to remove these carbon deposits resulting in improved engine performance, higher gas mileage, and preclude mechanical damage.

Driveline Services

A vehicle's driveline are the components that convert engine rotation to power at the wheels. It involves gear boxes that contain lubricant. Largely due to high heat, the lubricant becomes less effective over time and gears, bearings and other components can become worn and damaged. Unless serviced, these components will eventually break. Exactly what components need servicing and at what mileage depend on your specific vehicle but they will fall within the range of 30-60,000 miles. Ask us about your specific vehicle.
