Our Story

PETER A. KANARIS, JR. - FOUNDER/OWNER

Pete Kanaris (34), grew up with a natural love of dirt, as his parents were both involved in horticulture by trade.  Beginning in his teenage years, Peter gained landscaping experience with large multinational companies that were responsible for maintaining properties as large as Busch Gardens & Innisbrook Resort.  At 21, he was ready for the responsibility of entrepreneur, founding his own landscaping company in 2000.

After many years of shopping for organic produce, he felt the need to merge his love of healthy, chemical-free food with his knowledge about Florida gardening to create a new business model. In the fall of 2010, he expanded his landscaping business into an edible landscaping & organic gardening company, sparking the birth of the GreenDreams business mission.  Since 2010, he has never stopped learning from the wide range of classes, courses, convergences & conferences... and has gained even more knowledge from fellow growers.  He has also gained more knowledge than a classroom or conference could ever teach - he has learned from hands-on experience with his own projects over the past few years.  Through constant gardening projects, he has gained immense amounts of trial & error & knows how to obtain great achievements by avoiding common pitfalls.

Backyard Aquaponics Workshop, May 2011– Green Acres Aquaponics, Brooksville, FL (Completion Certificate)

Permaculture Design Certification Course, February 2012, Wayne Weisman, The Permaculture Project, hosted by Heartland Gardens, Estero, FL (Completion Certificate, Pete Kanaris).  9-day hands-on intensive certification course in Estero, FL.  Specialties: pattern recognition in natural systems, property observation, earth & water manipulation techniques, seed saving & propagation, biological pest control, aquaponics & aquaculture, local plant functions & guild concepts.

Edible Forest Gardens Design Intensive Course, May 2012 (Certificate), Homestead, FL
Eric Toesmeier, author of Perennial Vegetables & co-author of Edible Forest Gardens, hosted by Earth Learning Center in Homestead, FL (Completion Certificate, Pete Kanaris).  3-day Intensive Course, lectures on design process, including perennial guilds, underutilized natives, carbon sequestration potential of perennial agriculture.  We took part in a planting project at Earth Learning’s food forest & took field trips to the Fruit & Spice Park & the Everglades for observation of mature tropical edibles & natural ecosystem mimicry.

We came to a crossroad after several years of awareness to the practices & consequences of industrial agriculture.  The harmful effects of factory farming & our chemical-based conventional agriculture system are leaving a huge burden on public health, as well as our land & water.  As parents, we carry this burden heavily, knowing that we can either leave a legacy for future generations or we can leave a calamity.

We made a decision in the late fall of 2010 & began to shift our market; helping our fellow Floridians learn about organic growing methods through workshops & courses on small space gardening & teaching how to use edibles in their existing landscaping.  We held classes, open to the public to share subjects like seed starting, composting, planting fruit trees, perennial edibles & other beneficial trees & plants for Florida properties.

Ironically, our 14 years of previous business ownership has been in the traditional Florida landscaping industry.  Before we shifted focus, we once installed grass & ornamentals that require large amounts of water & other resources.  We had freely handed out referrals for chemical fertilizer, pesticides & herbicides.  But now, we teach alternatives that build & repair soil, harvest water, produce food & provide habitat for beneficial insects.
